The Volvo XC90 has been around for nearly twenty years. Today I’m in this 2012 D5 to see what they’re like. Let’s go…

I’ve borrowed this car from my colleague – it’s listed on his website:

Hi Matt! Let me tell you I've decided to pick a Volvo within 2 and a half years approximately, waiting for a lower price for the Lexus LS Luxury 500h! I'll make up my mind among 3 models: V90, S90 and XC90! My definitive choice will depend on the best quality price (of course) best pair of colors and the Bowers and Wilkins sound system!! I've noticed that the interior quality and the style are the same; the type of car is what's different! I think I won't regret it!! Also, in the long run, my back will thank me for those absolutely comfortable seats!!
What's your advice? What would you choose? As far as the XC90, I'm referring to the latest model of course! Ever since Volvo was acquired by Geely Holding……….. It's been given a new lease of life 😁😁

I mean volvo is made for high scandinavian peaplo……..

Kay Tee says:

We had one for 10 years, and 100,000 miles. your comments are spot on. Generally they don’t leave you on the side of the road, and whilst running costs aren’t Corsa / Fiesta the Twats tend to give you a bit more courtesy!
For me it’s a what price do you put on peace of mind when your family drive off up the road and your world is in a tin box. If you can afford it, send them off in it, then relax enjoy the peace, grab a beer and what some shit on YouTube………

Review the 2015 model next, it would be great for a comparison

No Togoogle says:

Can't take him seriously, he needs to wear a John Smith's top, and a whippit.

Skosi K says:

Drove a 2008 185 hp version for 11 years and 250,000 km (first as family tank, later as Mum‘s taxi) – and the car has not missed a beat as family carrier (4 at the time small kids and a dog), great for daily run, brilliant for crossing the continent plus a yearly trip to Tunisia.

Now into my second 2nd gen XC90 (first D5, now T8) and the old tank was swapped against wife‘s new XC60 T5 – with the Misses crying how she misses the old analogue, 5 cyl rambling, soft and cushy old Swede.

So, I guess, most real users actually are not into a sporty drive (like „professional“ testers), but the everyday qualities. Matter of price I guess, but 1st gen XC90 are an awesome piece of kit. (Well, except the satnav, that was terrible – bless the smartphones!!!)

William Cuthbertson says:

I have three XC90S and I love them all. My never sell them and also I have a V70.

SirXavior says:

The Volvo XC90 is Jeremy Clarkson's favorite car, say anything wrong or negative about this car and I bet he'll punch you and your producer.

MK_Heretic says:

3 family volvo d5s taxi running over 250k miles yet all injectors leak back tests are perfect and show no failure. Very misleading information right there, where did you get £200 per injector? They don't fail just like that, its likely just a washer seal needing to be replaced. The 165hp d5 is in no way underpowered as you described yourself it does 0-60 in approx. 10 sec which is great for a car this size. You contradict your self in a lot of things, might want to consider what you say before actually saying it.

Rodney Emmerich says:

I have an electronic copy of the xc90 workshop manual, it has in excess of 8000 pages 😜😜

Lord Rupert says:

6:04 Arm rests! It infuriates me and perplexes me in equal measure why so many car manufacturers put arm rests into their car that are too low and too far back. It means they are absolutely pointless and useless unless you're a 6 foot cranefly with rickets. I absolutely love an arm rest in a car. Such a simple thing yet it relaxes me immensely when driving, so much so it's a necessity on my next car.

yamahaevo says:

You are missing the point with the engine sound. Like having a sports car with no engine sound.

Phil Passmore says:

Wish you would review an XC60!

SAXONWARLORD1000AD says:

I WONDER WHAT 3RD WORLD REJECTS LIKED THE CHROME JAG

SAXONWARLORD1000AD says:

I HAVE AN 04 PETROL WITH 130K ON IT WITH A LAUNDRY LIST OF PROBLEMS – TRANS BEING THE 1ST – ABS – AWD – FUEL MANAGEMENT – THE A-HOLE THAT SOLD IT TO ME CLEARED THE CODES BEFORE I BOUGHT IT AND NOW ITS A PAPER WEIGHT – 2 MECHANICS DONT EVEN RECOMMEND TRYING TO FIX IT

CC S says:

That generation volvo diesel motor have a really weak component that control the turbo. Its a plastic control arm that breaks and you have to change the whole turbo for 1.5k if you go to a dealer.

Bosniacu ™ says:

Slightly mean your review. I own one almost exactly like this, but from 2010 (still, the facelift model), and I never experienced the lack of confidence you mention so many times, or that I'm not in control of the car. Yeah, definitely it's not an X5… but it's waaay better! And, just fyi… the navigation screen comes up in an angle for a reason… so that the sun gets less chances to reflect in it, hence increasing your security. You really don't have to lean your head, it's perfectly viewable.

sam says:

them auto gearboxes really let it down but the manuals , bulletproof

Aleksander Prenga says:

He is stupid i just bought one of those D5 its power full car and i love it has more power then the reng rover

Graham Groom says:

Do you think the same of the XC60? I’m seriously considering one for the wife as apposed to an X3 Msport.

Shane Anderson says:

What a whyning complaint feast .

jan Staes says:

my dad bought one new, with 180 hp it was a bit underpowered. 210 hp version would be my choice. good car.

TheTiloalfa6 says:

You’ve given it a low mark for handling, but my 2006 4.4V8 handles amazingly since I installed some BILSTEIN B6 shocks! And the off road performance is excellent in my opinion, I’ve had it off road all over Fraser for days, a massive sand island in Australia where “proper 4WD’s” often get bogged. It didn’t get stuck once. Also had it in deep mud and extremely steep and rough loose rocky 4WD tracks that sure it’s ground clearance leaves a bit to be desired but it gets up some seriously scary mountainous stuff! I broke a front CV shaft when it slipped sideways up an extreme incline and suddenly gained traction but that exact part was a cheap Chinese aftermarket part from ebay that I didn’t buy again, got a genuine Volvo part and it’s as strong as ever. But after that inferior Chinese steel CV axle shaft snapped in half the XC90 didn’t leave me stranded.. it got us all the way back out of the steep forest tracks, through a creek to the camp site and another 25ks up the road to meet a tow truck. That smart electronic HALDEX AWD system sure did it’s job transferring the drive to the rear that day!
So please do your actual research when you say it’s not the best for off roading.
