A big step into the future.

Mercedes-Benz is taking a big step into the future with numerous innovations in the future E-Class, including in terms of the design of the interior, which features a wide high-resolution next-generation dual display (12.3 inches per display) that appears to hover in space. In addition, touch-sensitive control buttons on the steering wheel make their first appearance in a car. They allow the driver to control the entire infotainment system using finger swipes without having to take their hands off the steering wheel. The all-new experience is rounded off by a novel, intelligent graphic design with high-resolution visualisations and animations as well as simplified control logic. At the same time, the occupants enjoy a sensual interior with spacious architecture and high-quality materials.

Eye-catching dual display.

The eye-catcher in the comfort-oriented, luxurious interior of the future E-Class is two displays each with a 31.2 cm (12.3-inch) screen diagonal and a resolution of 1,920 x 720 pixels. These merge visually to form a wide-screen cockpit, thus acting as a central element to emphasise the horizontal bias of the interior design. As the instrument cluster, this wide-screen cockpit contains a large display with virtual instruments in the direct field of vision of the driver as well a central display above the centre console. A common glass cover results in a modern flat-screen look. The driver can choose between three different styles to select their preferred screen design: “Classic”, “Sport” and “Progressive”.

Touch control buttons in the spokes of the steering wheel.
The future E-Class is the first ever car to integrate touch control buttons in the spokes of the multifunction steering wheel. Like the surface of a smartphone, the buttons are touch-sensitive and therefore respond precisely to horizontal and vertical finger swipes. This enables the driver to control every function of the infotainment system in a simple, logical and intuitive manner without having to take their hands off the steering wheel. Having selected the desired function with a swipe, the driver presses the appropriate touch control button to trigger the function.

A further input option, familiar from the C-Class, is offered by the touchpad on the centre console. This, too, allows all functions to be controlled by single or multi-finger gestures (multitouch). It also permits letters, numbers and special characters to be entered as handwriting. In addition, the driver can use the COMAND Controller and LINGUATRONIC voice control to control the infotainment system. The driver can choose at any time which input method they prefer. Additionally control by direct button is possible.

Making information intuitively ascertainable.

The goal in developing the all-new control and display concept was to closely unite intuitiveness of use with functionally expressive yet attractive design. The result is that passengers in the E-Class can enjoy a new control experience with high-resolution visualisations and animations. The developers have focused on the use of newly implemented presentation and display techniques to make it easier – i.e. more intuitive – for the driver to register and experience information. For example, animated displays are used to show the mode of action of assistance systems, or of DYNAMIC SELECT.

The interior as an expression of emotion and intelligence.

With its design bias towards a sense of space, the interior of the future E-Class combines the elegance of the luxury class with the cultivated sportiness of the C-Class. The design idiom of the new business saloon is characterised by an interplay of strong solid bodies with sculptural surfaces and an avant-garde clarity and extensiveness of control and display zones. This gives form to an expression of emotion and intelligence, a wholly unique, contrast-rich Mercedes-Benz design language that optimally reflects the design philosophy of “Sensual Purity”. The horizontal, low-lying trim part of the instrument panel with its elegantly sweeping form and flowing lines creates a visual sense of space with a formal calm.

The interior lighting makes exclusive use of durable, energy-saving LED technology. The same applies to the optionally available enhanced ambience lighting. With 64 colours, it offers a host of possibilities for personalisation.

World premiere: the new all-electric Fuso eCanter

The Fuso Canter E-Cell is now the Fuso eCanter. The new name represents the third generation of the world’s first fully electric-powered light truck, and the small-scale production run is an important step on the way to full production. Technically, the eCanter is radically different from its predecessor and benefits from the extensive findings of customer trials with the second generation and the reduced costs of battery and component technology. It will be presented at the IAA International Motor Show for Commercial Vehicles 2016.

The Fuso eCanter’s locally zero-emission drive will not only reduce the impact of exhaust and noise emissions on city centres, but will also be an economically attractive alternative to diesel engines. Thanks to lower technology costs the eCanter will be launched to market at a competitive price. Lower running costs compared to an equivalent diesel model mean that any additional expense can be repaid in less than three years.
The new eCanter uses a permanent synchronous electric motor with an impressive output of 185 kW and torque of 380 Nm. Power is transferred to the rear axle by a standard single-speed transmission.

The vehicle premiered at the IAA has a battery capacity of 70 kWh. Depending on the body, load and usage, a range of more than 100 km without stationary recharging is possible. The batteries are spread over five units, one centrally in the frame right behind the cab and two more on each side of the frame. They are water-cooled lithium-ion batteries that provide a long service life, high efficiency, especially at high ambient temperatures, and compact construction of the battery units. The eCanter’s exceptional weight balance is worth highlighting. The chassis load capacity of the 7.49 t vehicle is 4.63 t including the body and load.

Individual battery packs with three to six sets of batteries of 14 kWh each are planned for the upcoming small-scale production run. This allows the eCanter to be adapted to customer requirements with regards to range, price and weight. The concept is based on the results of customer tests that show that for some operators, payload is more important than range, while others are happy to sacrifice payload for longer range, i.e. more batteries.

Equally adaptable are the charging options: up to 80 percent capacity within an hour with direct current at a quick charging station, or 100 percent in seven hours with alternating current. In the future, rapid charging with 170 kW will be possible, meaning 80 percent battery capacity in only half an hour. A standard Combo 2 plug (known as Combined Charging System) is used for charging.

The results of a year-long fleet test with the second generation electric Canter have shown that around 1000 euros per 10 000 km can be saved with this vehicle compared to a diesel version. Coupled with a reduction in maintenance costs of around 30 percent, this makes the Fuso an economical solution for customers. The projected sales price means that any additional expense will be repaid in less than three years. These vehicles have proven their suitability for daily use in short-radius distribution and urban transport.

The Fuso eCanter will have its world premiere at the IAA as a preview of the small-scale production run that will be delivered to customers in Europe, the USA and Japan as of 2017. The exhibition vehicle features a unique and attractive design, with LED headlamps and a distinct grille and bumper, and a redesigned interior including a central, removable tablet with connectivity functions. The wide comfort cab is painted in metallic blue, as are the fully-clad sides. A walk-on glass floor in the exhibition vehicle’s box body offers a view of the drive unit and the batteries.

While these design elements provide a vision of the eCanter’s future, the technology is the same as in the small-scale production model.

The production version of the Fuso Canter on show at the IAA has been noticeably upgraded. The world’s best-selling light commercial vehicle covers the range from 3.5 t to 8.55 t permissible gross vehicle weight. The upgrade includes a new colour concept for the interior with functional black, high-quality flooring and chrome trim in the cockpit.

From a technical point of view the focus is on the second generation of the Duonic double clutch transmission. A new shift strategy saves fuel, and the new clutch further increases the longevity of the robust Canter. All Canter with Duonic now feature a hill holder as standard and optional cruise control. The engines in all Canter now comply with the Euro VI emissions standard, combined with SCR technology.

2016 Mazda Mazda6 I Grand Touring Review. The 2016 Mazda Mazda 6 is a mid-size sedan capable of 40 mpg on the highway. The Mazda6 is powered by a SkyActiv gasoline 2.5L engine producing 184 horsepower and 185 lb-ft of torque, routed through a 6 speed automatic transmission to the front tires. Features include 19 inch alloy wheels, rain-sensing windshield wipers, heated side mirrors, heated front seats, rear lip spoiler, 8-way power drivers seat, leather-trimmed sport seats, bluetooth, paddle shifters, rearview camera, advanced keyless entry, 60/40 split folding rear seats, Bose 11 speaker sound system, heads up display, LED daytime running, fog, and taillights, power moonroof, Mazda Radar cruise control, I-ELOOP, lane departure warning, and active grill shutters.

The Mazda6 has many superlatives as far as how efficient this vehicle is in comparison to all of the other vehicles which I’ve tested. First off, it has the highest highway fuel economy rating of any of the purely gasoline vehicles which I’ve tried out, at 40 miles per gallon. This also gives it the second highest range of any vehicle I’ve tested, at over 650 miles assuming 40 miles per gallon. At an estimated $1,400 per year, it has the lowest annual fuel cost of any non-hybrid vehicle I’ve tested. It’s the most aerodynamic vehicle I’ve tested to date, tying with the GT-R’s 0.26 drag coefficient, however having a smaller frontal area. This is also accomplished with better than average ground clearance for a sedan, at 6.7 inches. The Mazda6, along with the MX-5, has the highest compression ratio of any gasoline engine I’ve tested at 13:1, however unlike the Miata the 6 only recommends regular octane fuel. Finally, the Mazda has the best smog rating of any vehicle I’ve tested, scoring a 9 out of 10, meaning very low nitrogen oxide or hydrocarbon emissions.

Following yesterday’s revealing scoops, the time for GM to pull the wraps off the new Insignia Grand Sport has come, with Vauxhall being the first brand to do so.

The new Opel / Vauxhall Insignia Grand Sport is based on a new modular platform which allowed not only for athletic proportions but also for a more spacious cabin and class-leading aerodynamics with a Cd figure of 0.26.

The new underpinnings also brought significant weight savings of up to 175kg (385lbs) with the body-in-white being 60kg (132lbs) lighter on its own. The roofline is now lower by 29mm with the tracks being wider by 11mm. The wheelbase is now longer by 92mm, with the overhangs reduced significantly.

As for the design, it’s pretty obvious that Opel wanted to bring as many elements of the Monza concept to production as they could. “Its design combines flowing lines and subtle surfaces with crisp, precise lines to exaggerate its dramatic proportions: it looks longer, lower and wider than it actually is, and it definitely looks upscale”, said Brit Mark Adams, Opel Vice President Design Europe. “Every design feature conveys technical know-how and the utmost precision. The new Insignia Grand Sport is an excellent value proposition with the aura of a car from the premium, upper class.”

Under the elegant bodywork, there’s a wide range of the latest technologies that aim to make the new Insignia Grand Sport not only safer but more comfortable as well; Opel has given their new model features like a new gen of their IntelliLux LED matrix lighting, Lane Keep Assist, Head-up Display and unique AGR-certified premium seats, front- and rear-seat heating and a heated windshield among others.

No official word yet on the powertrains though, with Vauxhall only announcing a wide range of turbocharged engines and transmissions when it is officially launched next year with a new eight-speed automatic gearbox to offer ‘class-leading’ shift quality. Range-topping models at launch are expected to use a 247hp 2.0-litre turbo petrol, at least until the OPC/VXR version arrives.

Also new is the intelligent all-wheel drive system, which features two electrically controlled multi-plate clutches that replace the rear axle differential, enabling for the first time the torque vectoring feature. The revised FlexRide chassis offers three driving modes: Standard, Sport and Tour with a new Drive Mode Control option to adapt the car continuously to the driving style by analyzing the information provided by the sensors and settings of the car.

Opel is going to reveal in full the new Insignia Grand Sport at the Geneva Motor Show this March, with Buick bringing it to the US under the Regal nameplate with a four-door saloon body as a MY2018 and GM also to offer it as the new Holden Commodore down under.

The extraordinary exterior of the Daimler’s Self Driving Truck Freightliner Inspiration Truck is dominated by the hood design, which overlaps the usual radiator grille. The hood can be pushed forward and tilted for opening. The door skins are shaped to perfectly blend with the lines of the front end. The side panels were re-designed to form a single unit with the hood and the wheel arches. The wheel arches themselves have been optimized aerodynamically and have a dynamic design.
The exterior lighting of the Inspiration Truck is a true eye-catcher and complete¬ly new: the license plate, indicators and the radiator grille shine blue as soon as the vehicle is in autonomous mode, and white and yellow while in standard operation. The unusual headlamps continue the design idiom of the hood.
A special feature in the interior are the bench seats, which were installed specifically for the driving event of the Freightliner Inspiration Truck premiere. In addition, halogen lighting in the interior creates a pleasant, cozy atmosphere.
Leadership role in autonomous driving
After the Cascadia Evolution Truck and the SuperTruck, the Inspiration Truck represents the third demonstration of the consistent way in which the Freightliner Trucks technology strategy has developed in the USA. As a global commercial vehicle manufacturer Daimler is demonstrating how in-telligent technologies can be rolled out across Group brands within the shortest time frame. Daimler Trucks’ worldwide platform strategy in particular allows economies of scale to be made.
A look at the technical systems that will be required for autonomous driving in the future and a comparison with the components in use in today’s passen-ger cars and commercial vehicles show that Daimler – with its Mercedes-Benz, Freightliner Trucks, Detroit Diesel and Fuso brands – is al¬ready in a leading position today. No other company has the combined power from the commercial vehicles and passenger cars sectors in this field. In doing so, the Group secures comprehensive know-how to optimally develop autonomous vehicles for highway traffic. In the field of commercial vehicles, the Highway Pilot system is the only one in the world to feature the kind of sensor and camera technology that makes operation of the Freightliner Inspiration Truck possible – from initial acceleration to the speed limit for trucks. With this, Freightliner Trucks presents the most inno¬vative product with the highest degree of automation for the USA.
In terms of on-highway commercial trucks, it is incorrect to refer to a ve-hicle in autonomous mode as a driverless truck. Drivers remain the boss in their vehicle because the technology developed as part of the Freightliner Inspiration Truck requires the presence of a qualified truck driver with valid commercial driver’s license in the cab and on the gauges. The driver is an important part of the system and must remain in control of the truck in certain traffic situations on the highway and on country roads, in city traffic and when hooking up a trailer or making deliveries.
Autonomous driving relieves drivers from tiring and often monotonous long-distance routes, which today represents a major part of their workload.

The 2015 Toyota Camry XSE V6 features a 3.5L V6 engine with DOHC, 24 valves, variable valve timing, and produces 268 hp and 248 lb-ft of torque. The vehicle puts the power down with a 6 speed automatic transmission with steering wheel mounted paddle shifters. This review will cover the exterior, engine and performance data, suspension, interior, infotainment system, and a test drive.

Toyota Rav4 AWD Review – Offroad Testing. The 2016 Toyota Rav4 features a 2.5L engine, 6 speed automatic, and available front wheel drive or all wheel drive. There’s also a AWD Hybrid Rav4 model offered. The engine produces 176 HP and 172 lb-ft of torque, and the vehicle is rated at 22 mpg city 29 mpg highway, with 6.3″ of ground clearance. The all wheel drive system consists of an electromagnetically control clutch which locks up the drivetrain to send power to the rear, splitting the torque 50/50. When the rear coupler is not locked, torque split can vary from 50/50 to 100/0, with all of the power sent to the front axle to save fuel in scenarios where rear power isn’t needed.

The all-new Alfa Romeo Giulia Quadrifolglio isn’t just Alfa’s new halo car, but the culmination of a multi-billion dollar investment to relaunch the storied Italian carmaker.

Key attributes of the Alfa brand have always been style, handling and performance, and the Quadrifoglio has all three well and truly covered.

Underpinned by a new lightweight rear-wheel drive architecture packing a 2.9-litre twin-turbocharged V6 petrol engine developing a big-league output of 375kW of power and 600Nm of torque – significantly up on the rival BMW M3.

Performance is scintillating. Alfa claims a 0-100km/h sprint time of 3.9 seconds, and back to zero in 32 metres when equipped with carbon ceramic brakes. Tope speed is said to be north of 305km/h.

That investment shows, too. The high-powered Giulia Quadrifoglio boasts its fare share of exotic materials and performance-enhancing technology.

The chassis is a combination of aluminium and steel, while the standard 19-inch alloy wheels are adjoined by a double wishbone suspension up front and a multilink system at the rear – most of which is aluminium. There’s more of the lightweight metal used for the guards and doors, but the roof and bonnet are fashioned from carbon-fibre.

The Quadrifoglio tips the scales at a rival-crushing weight of just 1524 kilograms. By way of comparison, the M3 with dual-clutch transmission weighs 1560kg, while the Mercedes-AMG 63S weighs in at a hefty 1800kg.

You’re probably curious as to why Alfa opted for a torque-converter automatic gearbox over a dual-clutch unit. Apparently, there wasn’t an appropriate transmission available, which coincided with the Giulia’s development schedule. Nonetheless, the engineers at Alfa’s historic proving grounds at Balocco, where we’ve come to put this car through it’s paces, announce confidently that “you will see its very good.”

They’re not kidding. I’ve dialled up the Race setting on on the Giulia’s rotary drive mode selector, and I’m punching it through the gears down the fastest section of this facility.
